$847-M Project To Improve 183 Airport Freeway

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Long awaited roadwork is slated to begin later this year on the 183 Airport Freeway -- an area that state transportation officials have called one of the most congested in the state.

"It's very bad," says Mike Brownlow of Irving, "sometimes it'll slow down to almost a stop." But during peak travel times, it can back up even worse.

"Bumper-to-bumper," says Mark Porter, "so maybe the expansion will no doubt be better." Then Porter adds with a chuckle, "later"… acknowledging that the construction will undoubtedly make his commute much more congested while improvements are made.

State transportation officials gave the green light to the project today with design work expected to get underway this fall. Officials hope construction will begin before the end of the year.

"The goal behind this project is really rather simple; it's to help relieve some of that congestion," says Ryan LaFontaine with TxDOT.

The three year, roughly $847 million dollar project will add nearly 28 miles of managed lanes and bring improvements to the 183 airport freeway from 121 to Interstate 35, Loop 12 from 183 to IH35, and on State Highway 114 from 183 to Rochelle.

"When this project is complete, we will have managed lanes from Fort Worth all the way to Dallas and that's a big deal for the people that travel that roadway every day," says Lafontaine.

"I'm all the time going to the airport," says Porter, "so anything to make it better -- I'm for!"
