COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - A North Texas woman viciously attacked by a pit bull might well owe her life to an officer with the McKinney Police Department.

According to officials, the woman being treated at the Medical Center of McKinney suffered significant injuries… and she's not the only one. The pit bull the family was petsitting also attacked her daughter.

The names of the victims have not been released.

When officers from the McKinney Police Department arrived at the home in the 300 block of Kingsbury Drive the pit bull was still attacking the adult woman. While attempting to rescue her, police shot and killed the dog.

Neighbors describe hearing a commotion and a child screaming for help. Soon police had filled the streets and paramedics were carrying a mother and daughter from their home.

Officers say the family was caring a relative's dog when the animal attacked them.

According to police, the pit bull actually bit the mother and her young daughter. Another female child in the house was injured as she tried to escape.

"It makes me really upset because they're a really sweet family," said a frustrated neighbor. "They were probably just trying to have a good night and dinner, and then just get attacked by a dog. Nobody deserves that."

The adult woman's husband was at a movie theater at the time of the attack and didn't learn of the incident until hours later.

While some of the victims injuries are "bad," a family friend said all are expected to be okay.
