'If You Know Something, Say Something': Mother Of Teen Shot Outside Elementary School Speaks On Tragic Loss
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — Mikel Phillips, 15, walked out of his great-grandmother's house last Friday evening, headed to meet a friend in a vacant lot just 20 yards from the front door.
"I called his phone over and over, until it started going directly to voicemail," Phillips' mother Shemeika White recounted Monday.
White never contact with her son. Police found Mikel Phillips' body one block away on the campus of R.L. Thornton Elementary School. He had been shot numerous times. Police say multiple shell casings were found at the murder scene."
"My kid was 15. It's nothing in this world he could've done that bad, for someone to shoot him up the way they did. Overkill," she emphasized.
A homicide detective is now assigned to Phillips' murder.
Phillips was a standout football player in Middle School, but he was not regularly attending school. His family confirmed that the teen had faced threats previously, but no details were provided.
His mother said the shooting was a ruthless act of harming a child, and she urged anyone with information to come forward. "They have torn my heart out of me. Something I created. I carried for nine months. We are hurt. If you know something, say something, just say something.. it could be you."
There are currently no suspects at this time and this remains an ongoing investigation.
But White is sure that someone knows who and why her son was killed.
"We hurt," she said. "If you know something, say something... just say something. It could be you."
