The devastating effects of flooding from the Edenville Dam levee break Wednesday has caused the draining of Wixom Lake. This flooding is beginning to raise concerns about environmental impacts.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer provided an update Wednesday afternoon after the Edenville and Sanford Dams failed causing flooding in Midland County.
Rapidly rising water overtook dams and forced the evacuation of about 10,000 people in central Michigan, where flooding struck communities along rain-swollen waterways.
Two Midland-area schools were opened for evacuees and more than 50 roads have been closed. The evacuations in Michigan followed days of heavy rains in parts of the Midwest that also brought flooding to Chicago and other parts of Illinois, as well as Ohio and other states.
An emergency order was issued Wednesday by the city of Detroit to address the flooding in major areas of the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood.
As many as 311,000 homes in US coastal areas could be underwater within the next 30 years.
DTE Energy says about 250,000 of its customers were without power and it expects 90 percent of its 370,000 affected customers to have service by the end of Tuesday. Consumers Energy restored power to most of its more than 118,000 affected customers.
"People are actually lined up the wrong way to get off the Evergreen Road exit for easily a mile."
