Over the last year, the NTSB identified 68 bridges built before 1991 that don't have a "current vulnerability assessment" and need to be evaluated.
There are 4,207 bridges in the U.S. that allow ships to pass under them. Of those, only 36% are described as having functional pier protection.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after was struck by a cargo ship early Tuesday morning. After two days of searching for six missing people and finding the bodies of two, attention has turned to clearing the waterway.
Maryland State Police Colonel Roland Butler said divers located two men around 10 a.m. in about 25 feet of water at the middle span of the bridge.
Six people were missing and presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge crumbled when a large container ship hit a support column, authorities said.
