General manager Ken Holland says the Red Wings will not announce a new coach until the Griffins are finished with the playoffs.
The first regret Babcock mentioned was comical - "I would have put a pool in when I first arrived."
"Is it about money? Sure it's about money," Babcock continued. "But there was enough money in every place it didn't have a factor in the decision."
The Detroit Red Wings today announced that they have agreed to terms with center Dylan Larkin on a three-year entry-level contract.
Babcock is leaving on good terms and deserves nothing but respect from Detroit.
"It was very emotional," Babcock said. "I had to get the Kleenex box out when I sat in his office."
The Detroit Red Wings are ready to start searching for a new coach — and right now there's only one clear candidate.
"I've got mixed emotions because he is one of the greatest coaches in the league, if not the greatest coach in the league," said Holland.
"I couldn't justify going past five years," Holland said Wednesday.
The search for the next head coach of the Detroit Red Wings will likely not take long, and the team will likely not need to look far.
Speculating on the next Red Wings head coach is a little like speculating on the next Democratic nominee for president.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Mike Babcock as their new head coach.
During the 2013 season, Babcock surpassed both Scotty Bowman and Jack Adams as the winningest coach in the storied franchise's history.
It's being reported the Sabres are opening their wallet to Babcock, reportedly offering him in the range of $5 million per season.
