Woman Struck By Bus In Birmingham
Birmingham police say a 56-year-old Pontiac woman was running for her bus when it struck and killed her. The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman Friday as Ellen Cleckley.
Police said Cleckley was a home-care aid leaving work about 9 p.m. Thursday in the Detroit suburb as she ran alongside the westbound Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation bus and attempted to stop it. A witness said Cleckley banged at a rear window and may have been caught underneath the vehicle.
At the scene, WWJ Newsradio 950 producer Gary Lundy spoke about the tragedy.
"They've got those little orange cones scattered across the street and on top of where the victim's personal belongings landed," he said.
Cleckley was pronounced dead at a hospital. An autopsy is pending.
No other injuries were reported.
SMART spokeswoman Beth Gibbons said the driver has been pulled from service. The company is investigating.
