Woman Gets Prison Time In Detroit Riverboat Shooting
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A woman will spend at least 12 months in prison in connection with a shooting that followed a Detroit riverboat cruise.
According to the Wayne County prosecutor's office says Circuit Court Judge Megan Brennan sentenced 28-year-old Latoiya Mitchell-Thomas on Monday to 1 to 5 years in prison on a concealed weapon charge.
Six riverboat passengers were wounded in August 2012 after a fight aboard the Detroit Princess between a woman, Mitchell-Thomas and her husband, 32-year-old Michael Thomas.
Authorities said 28-year-old Mitchell-Thomas fired into a crowd from a car after passengers left the boat. Mitchell-Thomas was found not guilty in March on other charged including attempted murder.
Her husband, who was also shot, got two years' probation at his March sentencing for felonious assault
Charges were dismissed last month against 46-year-old LaDon Richard who had been accused of shooting Michael Thomas later that same day. Brennan ruled there was insufficient evidence and that a lower court had erred in setting the case for trial.
Detroit Princess General Manager Chris Clarke said the post-cruise shooting was the result of a family argument that began aboard the boat.
