What To Consider When Building A Home Gym In Detroit

Because your health is an important investment, it's worth it to get regular exercise in at home. To do so safely, you need a designated space to work out. A home gym is something that anyone can establish with some effort. Especially with inconsistent Detroit weather, exercising outside is not always possible. Consider building your own workout area with these helpful tips.

Designated Room: Start by picking a room of the house, preferably one with carpeting since wood and tiled floors make for easy slipping and do little to cushion sound. It should be an area that is spacious enough to allow you to stretch your entire body in both a standing position and when sprawled on the floor. Choose a room that has a window to allow fresh air in during the workout.

Exercise Bench: Exercise equipment can be kept simple for a home gym since you will likely be working out alone, without an instructor or spotter. An adjustable exercise bench - with at least three incline settings - is a must for a home gym. Benches carry the benefit of having a multitude of core exercises to experiment with. Benches also allow for low maintenance and can be pushed up against the wall when not in use.

Weights: Free weights and dumbbells are necessary as they can easily be added to a variety of exercises and can increase in weight over time. Weights can be stored in a closet or under the bed which is great if you can't dedicate an entire room to the gym. A stability ball is another good choice as it works the abs and can also function as a seat when doing bicep curls.

Miscellaneous Additions: Some knick knacks to consider placing in the your home gym are a large clock to keep track of time, at least two full-length mirrors positioned in such a way that you may check your technique, a wall calendar, an oscillating fan and perhaps an inspirational image to motivate you to push through those hard sets.

Proper Use of Time: After setting up a gym in your home, one benefit is that there will be no reason not to get a quick weight-lifting session in before dropping the kids off at school or after a couple hours of TV watching on the couch. Who knows, perhaps a healthy physique is what will make you the most memorable on that next job interview.
