Walk For The Cure Raises $4.1 Million, Slightly Less Than 2010
DETROIT (WWJ) - The economy may have slowed the pace of the annual Walk for a Cure. WWJ Newsradio 950 Reporter Mike Campbell runs down the numbers.
Fifteen hundred registered walkers raised $4.1 million for the 2011 Susan G Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure.
That's down about a million dollars from the year before, when slightly more walkers, 1850, put on their shoes and walked 60 miles in three days to raise money for breast cancer research.
In 2009, $4.7 million dollars was raised during the local event.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports charitable giving rose 2.1 percent in 2010, following consecutive drops of 6.2 percent in 2009 and 7 percent in 2008.
Those are the deepest drops, and the most recent numbers, in the history of a 56-year-old "Giving USA" study done annually by Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy.
