Viewing Party, Cheers For Olympic Skating Teams Stemming From Canton Ice Arena

CANTON (WWJ) - The U.S. figure skating team is in contention for a medal after ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the short dance over Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, of Canada.

Both teams train at the Arctic Edge of Canton as does the U.S team of Maia and Alex Shibutani, also competing at the Olympics in Sochi.

Arctic Edge general manager Craig O'Neill says it's an exciting time, but he's concerned about security at the games.

"Oh yes, of course, of course. They say it's safe if you stay in the bubble, but you gotta be concerned with everything going on in the world today."

"They look great, we had a lot of people here this morning ... (gathered) around the TV ... trying to get a peek at them," he said.

O'Neill says they'll probably have a viewing party at the ice rink next weekend during the regular figure skating competition.

"Oh, they're great," said O'Neill. "They're down to earth people, you know, they, they'll talk to you ... if you come by and say "hi" to them, they'll stand there and talk to you adn they're here every day and you see them.  Kids'll come up to them and ... ask for their autograph and they're just so humble."

O'Neill says he just hopes the athletes, their friends and family all return home safely.

Maia and Alex Shibutani, are an ice dancing team who train at Arctic Edge and who are also competing at the Olympics , but not in the team competition, which continues on Sunday.
