At least two vehicles struck by bullets on Interstate 96; police asking for information
At least two vehicles were struck by bullets about 1:45 a.m. Friday on Interstate-96 in Metro Detroit, and Michigan State Police are asking the public for tips on the investigation.
The Detroit Regional Communication Center initially got a call of four to five gunshots fired in the area of I-96 and the Davison Freeway, the Michigan State Police reported. A few minutes later, a motorist drove to the Detroit Police Department's 10th Precinct, relating that his vehicle was hit by a bullet as he was driving eastbound on I-96.
While officers were still speaking with the first motorist, a second driver arrived to report their vehicle struck by several rounds.
No one was hurt as a result.
The freeway was shut down in the early morning hours along eastbound I-96 local lanes and Meyers Road, but no evidence was recovered, the report said.
Another freeway closure happened about 1 p.m. Friday on eastbound I-06 near Schaefer Highway as police took another look at the area.
"Detectives have determined that one of the drivers was the intended target of this shooting and the second driver was an innocent bystander and their vehicle was struck by a stray bullet," MSP F/Lt Mike Shaw said in his report.
Police ask that anyone who was a witness or has information to provide call 855-MICH-TIP or 800-SPEAK-UP.
