Valverde Leaves Game After His Back Tightens Up
RHP Jose Valverde sustained a back injury trying to complete the ninth inning Tuesday and had to be taken out with two on and two out and Detroit holding a 10-6 lead. Valverde retired the first two batters he faced but gave up a single plus a double and grimaced after throwing the final ball of a 3-and-1 count on RF Alex Rios of Chicago. "His lower back tightened up," manager Jim Leyland said. It is not believed to be serious but it may prompt Detroit to hold him out of Wednesday's game as a precaution.
