'Underwear Bomber' Lawyer Suspended For 6 Months

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit attorney who represented the so-called "underwear bomber" has been suspended from practicing law for six months.

The Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission had accused Anthony Chambers of mishandling approximately $40,000 in clients' money and committing other violations of professional conduct.

Chambers told the state Attorney Discipline Board that he's an alcoholic who drank as much as a bottle of Jack Daniels a day during the peak of his problems. He testified in December that he also had depression.

Chambers' suspension began Monday. A message seeking comment was not immediately returned Tuesday.

The penalty is not related to his work for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is serving a life sentence for trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner with a bomb in his underwear on Christmas Day, 2009.

Chambers has been in the news, also in recent months, defending other higher-profile clients including Anthony Bennett, who awaits trial in the death of his girlfriend's 4-year-old son, who was found buried on a mid-Michigan Indian reservation.

It was not immediately clear if Bennett's trial would be delayed or who would represent him.
