Turkey smashes into pickup windshield as motorist was driving on I-96 in Livingston County
A pickup driver was lucky to escape injury after a turkey flew onto and smashed his truck's windshield Thursday, the Michigan State Police reported.
The accident happened about 12:45 p.m. while the driver, a 19-year-old Sterling Heights man, was eastbound in a 2022 Ford F-250 on Interstate 96 near Fowlerville Road in Livingston County.
In an attempt to cross the highway, the turkey went into the path of the pickup and crashed through the windshield.
The bird landed across the truck's steering wheel and column, according to a photo provided by Michigan State Police.
"The driver was able to maintain control of his vehicle and avoided turning this into a major crash," troopers said in their report. "No injuries to the driver. Turkey not so much."
Michigan's spring turkey hunting season lasts for a few weeks beginning in late April, with exact dates varying across the state. The season started on April 19 in Livingston County.
"Be on the lookout for turkeys that may fly into the path of your vehicle as they attempt to elude hunters," the state police said.
