Tony Ortiz: Senior Bowl Players The Lions Should Keep An Eye One

Ryan Kerrigan:  It was an up-and-down week for the Purdue standout, who - according to stories last week out of Mobile - struggled against the run during practices, and seems to be suited to be a situational pass rusher in the NFL.  In Saturday's game, however, Kerrigan was outstanding with a sack and a couple of tackles.......

How this affects the Lions: Unless he's lights out during the NFL's Scouting Combine, Kerrigan will likely be around when Detroit picks #13 in the first round.

Cameron Jordan: The Cal defensive end raised his draft stock with a solid week of practice and a good game on Saturday, where he was a standout against the run and rushing the passer.

How this affects the Lions: Not much, since he'll likely be taken before the Lions pick at #13 in the first round.  Jordan is probably a better fit for a 3 - 4 defense, which is the system he played in at Cal.

Colin Kaepernick: The Nevada quarterback showed good passing and running skills in Saturday's game.  He also adjusted well to taking snaps under center and in the shotgun, since Kaepernick took snaps almost exclusively out of the "pistol formation" at Nevada.  One negative: he lacked accuracy during the game and the week's practice.........

How this affects the Lions: Not much.  If Drew Stanton leaves as a free agent, Kaepernick could get a look as a possible undrafted free agent / developmental QB, but that's unlikely to happen.

Nate Solder / Anthony Castanzo:  Both of these offensive linemen - according to reports - were solid during the week of practice and each played well during Saturday's Senior Bowl.  The Scouting Combine will be important for both, who will be first round selections in April's NFL draft.

How this affects the Lions: Possibly a lot, since both could move into the Top 10 of the draft with solid Combines.  That could start a domino effect, which might push someone to #13, where the Lions will draft.  Solder and Castanzo could also be available at #13, and the Lions have a need to develop some young talent along the offensive line - plus, how does RT Gosdar Cherilus bounce back from December knee surgery??

Leonard Hankerson:  The 6'3, 208 pound receiver from Miami surprised me with how smooth he was in the Senior Bowl.  He adjusted well to whatever quarterback threw him the ball and he seemingly caught everything thrown his way - which he also did over the final month and a half for the offensively challenged Hurricanes.

How this affects the Lions: Could be a tempting pick on day 2 or early on day 3 of the draft [assuming he falls that far], especially with the Lions looking for a productive #3 WR to help out Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson.  Free agency could also be a factor, especially if the Lions can land a veteran #3 [some interesting names on the market:  Terrell Owens, Braylon Edwards, TJ Houshmanzedah and Steve Breaston].

Da'Rel Scott:  The Maryland running back [who's shaped like a fire hydrant] ran well in the Senior Bowl and in the Terps' bowl game against East Carolina, where he ran for 200 yards.  What I liked about Scott was that he was run hard between the tackles during the Senior Bowl.  His draft stock could improve with a solid Combine.

How this affects the Lions: Depends.  Like Kapernick, he wouldn't be a bad pick-up as an undrafted free agent [which is likely, since he's ranked in the 20's among running backs in this year's draft], especially since the Lions could be looking for someone big enough [and tough enough] for short yardage situations.  He could be a nice alternative, if Kevin Smith decides to take his talents to South Beach [or any other NFL city].
