Tire Comes Up Flat With Consumers

DETROIT (WWJ) - Auto companies like them because they make a car weigh less.  But consumers aren't too thrilled with them.

The recent flak involves the "run-flat tires".

A recent survey says, if consumers had a choice, they would most likely choose not to have those run-flat tires.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Gary Lundy reports that drivers say they don't always give a smooth ride, the tires wear unevenly, and their replacement costs are generally higher than a conventional tire.

They also tend to wear out earlier than a regular tire.  They're okay if you pick up a nail in the tread, but if there's a sidewall puncture, you're out of luck, and will probably have to get the tire replaced. Many car owners say they would rather have a standard size spare tire.

And if you're in the market for either a new or used car, you might want to find out first if the run-flat tires are on the car you're interested in.
