CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers used up their entire bullpen (plus a second starting pitcher in Rick Porcello) in a six-hour-plus game Sunday, so Monday the team began shuffling players between Detroit and Toledo to replenish the depleted roster.
The Tigers sent Blaine Hardy and Patrick McCoy back to Triple-A Toledo, and they called up from Toledo the trio of Ian Krol, Justin Miller and Kevin Whelan. To make space on the 40-man roster, the Tigers released Casey Crosby.
Krol has a 4.97 ERA in 42 appearances for the Tigers this season. He has struggled recently - a 10.24 ERA between June and July - and was sent down at the beginning of the month.
Miller has a 1.45 ERA in 31 games for the Mud Hens this season, and Whelan has a 1.85 ERA through 35 appearances for Toledo this year.
Detroit's bullpen woes were heightened even before the lengthy game Sunday because reliever Joakim Soria was placed on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a left oblique strain.
In addition to bringing up a handful of relievers, the Tigers are also calling up starting pitcher Robbie Ray to pitch Tuesday in place of the injured Anibal Sanchez, who suffered a right pectoralis major strain and is also on the 15-day disabled list.
Ray has a 3.72 ERA in 18 starts for Toledo this season, and he has a 4.70 ERA in four games - three starts and one relief appearance - for Detroit.
The organization outlined the flurry of moves on its Twitter account and said another move would be announced Tuesday.
