Ground stop issued at Detroit Metro Airport due to thunderstorms, FAA says
Thunderstorms moving through Southeast Michigan early Saturday afternoon have prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a ground stop at Detroit Metro Airport.
According to the federal agency's website, the ground stop is in effect until 1:30 p.m. It impacts flights headed to the Romulus-based airport from 10 air traffic control regions spanning the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast, plus Toronto, Canada.
The National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms may become more widespread throughout Saturday afternoon and night in Southeast Michigan as a cold front moves through. An isolated thunderstorm could approach "severe intensity" in the afternoon, with wind gusts nearing 60 mph.
According to DTE Energy's outage map, over 3,000 people in Southeast Michigan were without power at 12:30 p.m. as showers rolled through.
This is a developing story.
