The Snack Attack: Twinkies Get Into The Holiday Spirit With White Fudge Peppermint Flavor [TASTE TEST]

The holiday season has officially arrived, never mind that it's not even Thanksgiving yet.

Hostess is known for making creative snack cake flavors that coordinate with the season, so the debut of their White Peppermint Twinkies is right on time. It features a golden sponge cake filled with creamy peppermint-flavored creme, dipped in white fudge and covered in sugar crystals.

As far as I know, it's the first time this Twinkies flavor has hit the shelves.

Review: White Peppermint Twinkies

Appearance: This version is slightly smaller in length than a regular Twinkie but then again, it is dipped in fudge. Compromises, people. It's also covered with red and white (or are they clear?) crunchy sugar chunks. On the box, the creme inside the Twinkie looked like it was a pale pink color but upon further inspection, I discovered that it's actually white. It might look like regular creme, but it is definitely a thicker consistency than the plain ol' vanilla flavor.

Aroma: I was expected to be smacked in the face with a peppermint scent but that wasn't the case. I had to get right up on this thing to smell the mint.

Taste: Again, I was kind of expecting to be overwhelmed with an overly sweet mint flavor but surprisingly, I wasn't. The first flavor I tasted was actually vanilla, probably from the fudge and golden sponge cake. Then came the minty flavor of peppermint. I have to add here that there's two kinds of peppermint flavors: the sweet mint that's more sweet than it is minty, and the minty mint that you expect a "mint" to taste like. The peppermint flavor in this Twinkie is the later. But when combined with the cake and fudge, the overall taste of this Twinkie is sweet mint. And while the sugar crystals don't add much to the flavor, they add a delightfully crunchy texture that I've never experienced before in a Twinkie.

Pros: Light mint flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. The addition of sugar crystals makes you forget you're even eating a Twinkie.

Cons: If you were looking for a strong peppermint flavor, you're going to be disappointed.
