Terry Foster: What Is Happening In Our City?
There are strange and wonderful things happening all at the same time. Ford and General Motors turned profits which they passed along to their employees while Chrysler and Eminem twirled a commercial that praised Detroit and made us all feel better.
Opening day is around the corner but these wild cat snow storms make it feel so far away. And speaking of storm clouds, we want to feel good about the Tigers but star player Miguel Cabrera went out for a bender before reporting for spring training. Now we don't know if the guy is an alcoholic or just can't handle his booze.
The Tigers appear to be sweeping this problem under the rug. And who can blame them? They want to win. Their fans want to win and they are hoping and praying this never happens again. My guess is it will happen again if they don't fix this problem. And it is a problem. This is the third bout of misbehavior by Cabrera since he joined the league.
Let's forget the drinking. His treatment of the police was just awful in its own right.
The Tigers are going to give us some thrills this season and I can't wait for opening day. It is going to be a blast. Now can they blast past Minnesota and the Chicago White Sox?
Meanwhile have the Pistons been watching too much CNN? They tried to duplicate protests in Egypt, the Wisconsin state capital and Libya by staging their own protest. Rip Hamilton reportedly cursed out Coach John Kuester and then weeks later half the team failed to report to shoot around before a game in Philadelphia.
Coach Q plays six players and there is a lingering cloud that has poisoned the team.
The Pistons have become an embarrassment and are falling faster than the Dow Jones after 9/11.
This is a stunning display of unprofessionalism. And you thought Dennis Rodman was dysfunctional? This takes the cake.
In the front office the negotiations between Karen Davidson and businessman Tom Gores has taken longer to seal than the Paris Peace talks. Gores is a very tough negotiator and is haggling over every penny in this deal.
On the political front the city and suburbs are fighting over water, the new governor is killing the movie industry and the city of Detroit is doing its best to hide the major problem of 100,000 stray dogs roaming the city by suppressing a video on it.
That is the great thing about Detroit. There is always something going on. That is why there is never a boring moment.
Now if only we could get rid of this snow.
