Student Construction Apprenticeship Jobs Start
Construction apprenticeships are beginning for Detroit Public Schools students hired to work on the district's $500.5 million capital improvement program.
The district says in a release that some students will start Wednesday morning with site supervisors at John R. King pre-kindergarten through eighth grade on the city's northwest side. Classroom instruction will be combined with onsite experience in the construction trades. It's a nine-week program beginning at six construction sites this week for 75 Detroit students.
The district is building or renovating 18 schools. The work is being paid through a voter-approved bond initiative.
