Strong Changeup Key In Scherzer Masterpiece
RHP Max Scherzer rebounded from a poor outing to post a career-high 15 strikeouts Sunday while working seven solid innings. "I always believe the next time I go out there I'm going to have a great start," Scherzer said. A pair of solo home runs accounted for the only runs he allowed in his four-hit effort. He had thrown 99 pitches and lasted only four innings May 15 and Sunday's performance was only the second time he had gone seven innings this season. Scherzer's fastball and changeup were dominant pitches and most of his strikeouts came on changeups or sliders. "My changeup was really diving," Scherzer said. "I was able to use it against both left-handers and right-handers and get swing and misses out of it." His 15 strikeouts matched the club record for a right-hander (Paul Foytack, 1956) and were the most in a game by a Detroit pitcher since lefty Mickey Lolich fanned 15 on Oct. 2, 1972.
