Stoney's Blog: Are The Lions Going Prime Time?
The NFL announced today that the New England-Indianapolis game scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 4, will be moved to out of prime time and back to the afternoon under the flex scheduling agreement with the networks.
The league has not announced what game will take the slot -- although there is sentiment for the Lions game in New Orleans against the Saints to fill the void. It sounds great. Drew Brees and the high flying Super Bowl 44 champions against the big mean tough Detroit Lions led by Ndamukong Suh.
But before we get all excited lets look at the other games that the NFL might choose instead of the Lions-Saints. There are three games that are just as worthy if not more and they are :
Falcons-Texans
Bengals-Steelers
Packers-Giants.
Are these as attractive as the Lions and Saints? One would have to say that they are all as worthy. Selfishly I would love to see the Lions under the spotlight of NBC's Football Night In America, but the Packers-Giants game makes more sense and most importantly more cents for NBC.
However, that is not what I think will happen. You see, the Giants are scheduled to meet the Cowboys the following Sunday night and they won't put the GMEN on two weeks in a row. The same scenario holds true with the Steelers-Bengals game because the Steelers will be facing the Chiefs the previous Sunday night. So that leaves Atlanta and Houston as the Lions' main competition.
Those two cities are bigger media markets than Detroit and New Orleans, but they don't have the pizzazz of the Lions and Saints. So my educated guess is that the Lions and Saints will be on NBC's Football Night In America Sunday December 4. Get your coneys and jambalaya ready.
