State Suspends License Of Compounding Center Linked To Meningitis Outbreak

LANSING (WWJ) - Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette says the company linked to the recent meningitis outbreak, The New England Compounding Center, won't be able to operate in our state any longer.

"The state of Michigan is suspending the license for the New England Compounding Center ... that made tragic, tragic mistakes that have caused deaths in the state of Michigan," said Schuette.

"There is nothing, nothing that is more important than the safety and welfare of the citizens in the state of Michigan," he said.

Schuette's office has also launched a more in-depth investigation into the outbreak, as they decide whether to take further legal action.

He said the investigation will determine whether additional civil or criminal action is warranted.

The Centers for Disease Control has stated that the number of infections related to the fungal meningitis outbreak has gone up again.

"Tennessee has 50 cases and we are right behind them with 41," said Angela Miniccucci from the Michigan Department of Community Health.

There are now 14 deaths, in a dozen states, including three in Michigan.
