Should Bars Be Required To Post Taxi Info?

WARREN (WWJ) - A Warren city councilman is proposing an ordinance that would require all bars in that city to post information on taxi cab services.

Mark Liss said he hopes that will cut down the number of drunken driving arrests. He has also prosecuted drunk drivers as an attorney, and has seen one scenario repeated often.

"A police officer stops somebody who is walking out of the bar, ready to get into the car, and they tell them to call a cab and they don't. So, what happens is about 20 minutes later they get stopped by the same police officer and arrested for drunk driving," said Liss.

Liss said he hasn't consulted with bars and restaurants, but he thinks they'll sign on.

"I actually think it will be better for business," said Liss. "That way there'll be less people who get arrested for drunk driving and less liability for bars who might have over-served somebody if they're not in their car."

Liss planned to propose the ordinance at Tuesday evening's Warren City Council meeting.
