Serious Injury Accident Shuts Down Van Dyke At Metro Parkway

STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - The intersection of Van Dyke Ave. and Metro Parkway (16 Mile Rd.) in Sterling Heights is closed to traffic due to a "very serious" accident.

Police say those involved suffered "serious injuries" in the crash before 11:30 a.m., but no information was immediately available about the victims or about exactly how many people were hurt.

Authorities have shut down the intersection at the scene for an accident investigation. They did not give a time-frame for when it would reopen.

The roads were slippery in some areas due to a wintry mix falling late into the morning, but it's unclear at this time of those conditions caused the crash.

Police are asking motorists to avoid the area.

WWJ traffic reporter John Bailey reports there are backups in all directions. He recommends drivers use Mound Road, Dodge Park, 17 Mile or 15 Mile Rd. as an alternate route.
