Section Of Eastbound I-696 Completely Closed This Weekend

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Heads up, metro Detroit motorists! A freeway closure could affect your weekend drive in Oakland County.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced a miles-long stretch of eastbound I-696 will be completely shut down this weekend as part of the ongoing I-275 repair project.

Eastbound I-696 closures will begin at 9 p.m Friday, July 15, between the I-275/I-96/M-5 interchange and Orchard Lake Road until 5 a.m. Monday — that's in an around Southfield, Farmington Hills and Novi.

Nightly lane closures will be in effect on eastbound I-696 through July 25, according to MDOT, and the freeway will be closed once again next weekend, July 22-25.

The following ramp closures and detour details should be noted:

Detour: eastbound M-5 to eastbound M-102 (8 Mile Road), then northbound US-24 (Telegraph Road) to eastbound I-696.

Affected ramps:
- The westbound M-5 ramp to northbound M-5 will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 9 p.m. Saturday.

Detour: westbound M-5 to westbound I-96, then southbound Beck Road, and eastbound I-96 to northbound M-5.

- The eastbound and westbound M-5 ramps to eastbound I-696 will also be closed starting at 9 p.m. Friday and will remain closed until mid-August.

Detour: westbound M-5 to westbound I-96, then southbound Beck Road to eastbound I-96, then eastbound M-5 to eastbound M-102 (8 Mile Road), and northbound US-24 (Telegraph Road) to eastbound I-696.

- The westbound Grand River Avenue ramp to westbound M-5 will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

The only open eastbound ramp is eastbound I-96 to northbound M-5.

Meantime, northbound I-275 remains closed from the I-96/M-14 interchange to I-96/I-696/M-5 until mid-September. [View the project map].
