Scherzer Undaunted By Rain Delay

Max Scherzer worked around a 53-minute rain delay Sunday, pitching 3 2/3 innings before the delay and 4 1/3 after. Scherzer won for the fourth time in his last six starts, with 12 strikeouts and no walks in a seven-hit performance. Manager Jim Leyland has been known to scrub starters after shorter rain delays, but Scherzer was sitting on a 4-0 lead when the rain came and he has been pitching better lately. "It's a tough call," Leyland said. "Normally it's somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour (when he'd decide not to let a pitcher go out after a rain delay). I might have had to stretch it (here). We were short in the bullpen. But he didn't miss a beat. He might have been better after he came back out." Scherzer was throwing his fastball up to 98 mph and got some strikeouts on nasty changeups and sliders.
