Phone scammer claims to be Lenawee County deputy; sheriff's office says "simply hang up"
LENAWEE COUNTY, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - Someone has been making phone calls and sending emails, fraudulently claiming to be a Lenawee County deputy and stating people have warrants for their arrest.
The Lenawee County Sheriff's Office explained the situation in a social media post Thursday. There have been multiple calls to the department saying that someone reached out to them by phone or email, claiming to be a Deputy Christopher Avery. In one case, emails went to a woman with several documents attached including one that claimed to be an order to arrest from the "United States District Court of Michigan."
While the motive for the scam is unclear, the woman who received the emails was encouraged to go to the sheriff's office.
"If you receive a call like this simply HANG UP, this is a scam! The Sheriff's Office does not make phone calls even remotely like these, nor do we have a Deputy by this name," the sheriff's office said. "And NEVER open an attachment from anyone you are not familiar with, especially if you are not expecting an email."
