Sandlot League Crowns The 2012 Harwell League Champ
ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - A two-out single in the first inning turned into the game winner as the Oakland Utilities beat the Matthews Hargreaves baseball team 3-1 on Monday.
All the scoring took place in the first inning as David Anderson ripped a two-out single to left to score the go ahead runs breaking a 1 - 1 tie.
And with the stroke of the bat the Royal Oak Sandlot League had its 2012 Harwell League champions in the 14 - 17-year-old division.
The Oakland Utilities team, under the direction of head coach Tom Watts, beat the Hargreaves team to take the best of three World Series two games to none.
"As a coach I had a great team," said Watts. "We took it one game at a time."
This was the second World Series trip for this team said Watts, last year the team made it to game three of the series but lost.
Oakland Utilities pitcher, Mathieu Bashi, threw a complete seven inning two-hitter highlighted by a diving catch in centerfield by Ben Borski late in the game.
The Oakland Utilities finished the regular season with a perfect 16 - 0 record and went 7-0 in the playoffs.
The Harwell League was dedicated to Ernie Harwell in 1996. Harwell, known as the voice of the Detroit Tigers is also in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
