Sam's Club Donates To Detroit School

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit-area Sam's Club warehouse stores have donated $10,000 to a school as part of the Detroit Public Schools' Volunteer Business Corps Program.

The district announced Tuesday that the donation to Durfee PreK-8 School also comes with a commitment by Sam's Club to give 5,000 books to the school's library and plans to renovate the school pool.

Sam's Club effort also includes mentoring at Central High School and providing 2,000 backpacks with supplies for fall classes.

"For all of the companies for which I worked, everything we were able to accomplish was due to people," said DPS Emergency Manager Roy Roberts, in a statement.

"For Detroit Public Schools and Durfee and Central, this business partnership and the many others and many to follow greatly increase the number of people who are working to improve education for our young people," Roberts said.

Added Durfee Principal Tracy Johnson,"It is truly a blessing that Sam's Club has adopted the Durfee students, and the Durfee/Central community. With their support, we can continue to expose our students to all that this world has to offer, as they continue to grow in their educational endeavors."

Sam's Club is part of Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. A company distribution center in the Coldwater area also is involved in the Detroit effort.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
