Rust Leads To Jeep Recall
AUBURN HILLS -- (WWJ) Chrysler is recalling 210,000 Jeep Liberties from the 2004 and 2005 model years because of possible rust issues. The recall is limited to cold weather states.
"It is really the vehicles that were sold in salt belt states, of which Michigan is one of them," said Chrysler spokesman Vince Muniga.
Muniga says salt can get into the suspension, and cause rust in the rear lower control arm.
"What happens is, and we're all familiar with rust here in Michigan," he said. "It will really deteriorate the metal, and it could cause some stressing in the metal, and it could cause the component to fail."
That could cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, which could lead to a crash.
"Not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue," said Muniga.
This is a voluntary recall, but the government had been investigating the Liberties for almost a year.
Chrysler says it will begin notifying owners by mail next month, and will replace the rear lower control arm.
