Report Ranks Detroit Among Top 10 Laziest Cities In America
DETROIT (WWJ) - Please, don't exert yourself too much while reading this, Detroit. You are, after all, one of the laziest cities in America, according to a recent report.
Career website Zippia.com recently analyzed 200 cities in the United States in terms of the number of hours worked, least number of employed residents, and fewest number of adults with a college degree, to rank the laziest cities in the nation. Detroit came in tenth place.
Researchers first analyzed the latest version of the American Community Survey from the Census Bureau, which looked at years 2010 through 2014, before settling on five areas of criteria: Lowest average hours worked, shortest commute time, fewest workers per household (labor force divided by the number of households), highest unemployment rate and fewest adults with a college degree.
Here's what the study says about Detroit: The city is home to 695,437 residents, only 13.1 percent of whom have a college education. The city also has an employment rate of 27 percent.
Oh, Detroit, you have gotten a bad rap in recent years. So we'll cut you a break. Just kidding.
Here's the good news: Detroit residents have a helluva commute time—an average of 27 minutes—which gave them a few anti-lazy points in our calculation. Here's the bad news: it ranked among the top 15 in every other category—especially dismal was its unemployment rate. The highest in the country.
But hey… at least if you are working in Detroit, you're working an average of just 36 hours per week…?
