Random Thoughts By Matt Dery

1. I really liked how fast the Lions looked on Sunday. For the first time in a long time, fans saw "team speed" and they saw it at the most important spot: Linebacker. Excellent road win to start the season.

2. Gosder Cherilus and Stephen Peterman. That is all. Enough said.

3. What a bizarre final play of the game yesterday as Tampa Bay tried to lateral its way down the field to tie it. We have seen it before, but it always scares me. What was most scary was Fox's Chris Myers calling Louis Delmas "Louise". Seriously. Go to your DVR's and listen back. I must have missed it, but fans tweeted at me that Myers also left his microphone on at one point and you could hear him over the air ordering a beverage.

4. That was the most raucous crowd I can remember seeing at Michigan Stadium in a very long time. Night game and Notre Dame in town and obviously a comeback for the ages certainly helped spur it on. But, those two teams are very flawed. I just do not understand why U of M year in and year out has terrible special teams. Kick coverage was sub-par, the return game was nowhere to be found and nobody knows what they have in Brendan Gibbons. I thought "This is Michigan?".

5. The Tigers just do not lose games. Nine straight wins and 36-19 since the All-Star break. Yes it helps that they have played JV teams since August 25, but, wins are wins. The Tigers are getting very good pitching and their defense has been much improved. That is the key.
The lineup is stacked with hot bats right now, but this team will make noise as long as Doug Fister keeps doing what he is doing and Joaquin Benoit continues to dominate people in the 8th inning. Those two guys hold the golden key right now.

6. I am a huge MLB slappy. I love the sport. But Major League Baseball really dropped the ball yesterday. The league would NOT allow the New York Mets to wear "FDNY" hats in honor of September 11. Why? It wasn't uniform code. So while the NFL allowed its teams to show patriotism and support for the police and fire fighters, MLB looks like the stodgy old uncle at dinner who will not smile in the family picture. There was an opportunity for some publicity there and Bud Selig and Joe Torre passed it up; not smart.

7. Michigan reciever Junior Hemingway is a "beast", Al Borges needs to get him the ball.
