Random Thoughts By Matt Dery 5-11-11

1. Last night's Red Wings win in Game 6 was easily one of the top sporting events in this area in the past few years. We get spoiled around here with great teams and great games, yet, no one can argue how exciting and adrenaline-rushing that victory was for Detroit. Props to the fans at the JLA.

2. The Red Wing players are the model for what we want in this city.
Gritty, caring, determined and unlike some other players on other teams in town, they would never disgrace the uniform with selfishness and acts of defiance. They earn their paychecks and boy is Pavel Datsyuk just good at hockey.

3. Wings fans also should be very fortunate to have two of the best play-by-play men in the NHL in Ken Kal and Ken Daniels. Both are extremely talented and call a darn good game.

4. Yes the Tiger bats are heating up, but, pitching is what wins games and the Detroit starters have been brilliant over the last eight games. Rick Porcello has won two of those games and he is the big key, because you know what you are gonna get now night in and night out from Verlander and Scherzer.

5. Victor Martinez is worth every penny the Tigers gave him. 10 RBI now in his last 4 games. V-Mart can flat out hit, but I am concerned about his health. He just does not look right running the bases.

6. Huge night for the Pistons on Tuesday. The NBA Draft lottery has arrived and if the ping-pong balls bounce Detroit's way they could land that game-changing lead guard that they desperately need. The front office has been extremely quiet as of late and they have spent a ton of time overseas looking at all options for the upcoming draft.
