Quicken Volunteers Share Money Smarts With Detroit Students
DETROIT (WWJ) - Beginning in November, K-through-5th graders at Chrysler Elementary in Detroit will partner with volunteers from Quicken Loans who will tutor them in subjects like math, reading and finances.
"I hope the outcome is that not only will our team members get better acclimated to Detroit and help young people to grow and get better, and that there's some real benefit to the young folks inside Chrysler Elementary in learning from what we do everyday as a business and ... just interacting with our people," said Quicken CEO Bill Emerson.
Regina Ann Campbell, the mother of a 3rd grader at Chrysler Elementary, is excited the program will build on what has already begun at home.
"He does get allowance and I'm working on him managing that," said Campbell. "Recently, my husband and I were actually talking about opening a checking account for him, so we can begin to have him do some balancing of his money."
Campbell said she believes that in this day and age it's crucial for young children to begin understanding money management.
Chrysler Elementary's Principal hopes the program will provide financial literacy tutorials not just to students, but also their parents.
