President Obama To Attend Carrier Classic Basketball Game
(Washington-WWJ) When Michigan State and North Carolina play basketball on the deck of an aircraft carrier next month, President Barack Obama plans to be in attendance.
The White House says the president has accepted an invitation for the seat of his choice at the first-ever Carrier Classic, to be played on the deck of the U.S.S. Carl Vinson in San Diego Harbor November 11, Veteran's Day. Mr. Obama, an avid hoops fan, can sit "wherever he wants," says Mike Whalen of the Morale Entertainment Foundation, which is organizing and promoting the event.
Only seven thousand seats will be available on the deck of the nuclear-powered carrier, famous for burying Osama bin Laden's remains at sea.
The president will begin Veteran's Day by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery before flying to San Diego for the Carrier Classic.
Top Navy officials and the congressional delegations of Michigan and North Carolina have also been invited to attend the game.
North Carolina defeated Michigan State in the 2009 NCAA national championship game at Ford Field in Detroit.
