Plans Set For USS Detroit Commissioning Events In October

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Plans are set for a commissioning ceremony for a U.S. Navy warship named after Michigan's largest city.

The USS Detroit Commissioning Committee says Oct. 22 is confirmed as the date for the ceremony. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Detroit on Oct. 14 and tours, VIP visits, celebrations and other events are planned in the week leading up to the ceremony.

From arrival to departure, the USS Detroit's Commissioning Week schedule is chock-full of activities for the crew, sponsors and public. Following Welcoming Ceremonies on the ship's arrival, other activities will include: Navy Band performances, tours, luncheons, group visits and receptions.

"The GM Riverwalk will be abuzz with excitement for a week, culminating in the Commissioning Ceremony," John Peracchio, USS Detroit Commissioning Committee Chair, said in a statement.

Peracchio said admission for the commissioning ceremony is free, but tickets are limited.

"The actual event is scheduled for the morning of Saturday the 22nd on the GM Riverwalk at the Renaissance Center, and seating is limited," he said. "Tickets are free to the public, and interested persons can sign up by visiting the website."

After its commissioning, the ship will cross the Detroit River on Oct. 24 to spend four days in Windsor, Ontario.

The future USS Detroit was christened in 2014 on the Menominee River at the Marinette Marine Corp. shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin. Lockheed Martin says the ship is capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots and can operate in water less than 20 feet deep. The ship is designed for a variety of missions in coastal waters, as well as humanitarian relief missions.
