Pistons Thinking Big For Ninth Pick
For the third straight year, the Pistons didn't have any luck moving up in the draft lottery. President of basketball operations Joe Dumars wasn't counting on having the winning combination, so he's content with staying put at No. 9.
"All the work we've been doing for months and months has been geared toward us being at the ninth pick," he said. "When your chances are 1.7 percent of moving up to the No. 1 pick, you don't put a lot of stock into that. You really put all your work into what the ninth pick is going to be."
Once again, the Pistons plan to select a big man. This time, they might actually get one.
Dumars came into last year's draft with the intention of choosing a frontcourt partner for center Greg Monroe, whom the Pistons nabbed with the No. 7 pick in 2010. That plan was altered on the fly when six power forwards and centers went off the board after Cleveland chose point guard Kyrie Irving. The Pistons switched to the "best player available" approach and selected point guard Brandon Knight with the No. 8 pick.
