Pickup Driver Hits Black Bear Roaming Freeway

WEST  MICHIGAN (WWJ/AP) - A pickup truck driver struck and killed a black bear roaming along a West Michigan freeway.

The driver tells a Grand Rapids TV station that "something black ran from" his left and was hit by his truck about 8 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 96 in Grand Rapids.

The bear ran south after being hit, but later died.

WOOD-TV reports that a bear was spotted earlier in the day eating from a trash can. Police issued an alert and a local high school soccer game was delayed as officers looked for the bear.

The animal was 2-years old, and weighed about 150 pounds.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
