Picking A College Major

After deciding on a college to attend, the second most important decision a student faces is picking a major. Will it be liberal arts or engineering; political science or occupational therapy?

For some, it's a no-brainer but for others it's more difficult.

Narrowing down the possibilities begins by looking within. Students should evaluate their interests, skills, values and personalities to navigate their way toward a decision. Next, they should look at the types of careers that their majors lead to.

Asking questions like: What tasks are performed by this occupation, and how much money does this career pay, gets them closer to deciding. Remember … college counselors are a great resource for this.

They know that even the coolest kids on campus break out in a sweat when it comes to a commitment of this magnitude. Eventually, things will click when students weigh the pros and cons of their choices and the best fit rises to the top of the list.

Once they formalize their choice and declare a major, the fun stuff starts. They should get busy meeting people by joining clubs associated with their major - in other words - explore it from every angle because the adventure is just beginning!
