It shouldn't be much of a surprise the baseball draft has flown under the radar.

It wasn't spawned to be a part of the game's fabric, but rather out of necessity in the mid-1960s because signing bonuses had gotten out of hand.

For years, baseball hid draft day away from the media. When I was a Tigers beat writer as recently as the late 1990s, teams were not allowed to release the names of their draft picks beyond the first round.

Why? They didn't want college programs to know how they had evaluated players.

It was ridiculous. Truly.

The oddity of it is that drafts make or break organizations in baseball every bit as much as other sports, which have learned turned their drafts into centerpiece events.
