When the subject is Michigan and Michigan State, and the position of head football coach, the perceptions are the following:
Michigan is the great traditional program of Fielding Yost, Harry Kipke, Fritz Crisler, Bennie Oosterbaan, Bo Schembechler and Lloyd Carr.
Michigan State has certainly had coaching giants, but Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty are from the distant past. When Nick Saban coached the Spartans, it turned out to be a stepping stone to national championships at Louisiana State and Alabama.
