There have been many times in this town when the reality of its sports teams hasn't measured the expectations.
The exception is the Red Wings.
The Red Wings have a championship pedigree. They have won four Stanley Cup titles since 1997 — more than any other NHL franchise. They have reached the playoffs 20 straight years — longest current streak in major professional team sports.
They're never like the 2008 Tigers, who were expected to win the World Series by many preseason forecasters after making blockbuster trades and free-agent signings — and were out of contention by the first week of May. The Red Wings aren't like the Lions, leading us on year after year, only to let us down mightily. The Red Wings have dropped a couple stink bombs in the opening round of the playoffs, but not too many. Then they bounced back — and quickly.
