A 74-year-old man has died after a house fire Tuesday evening in Waterford, Michigan.

Assistant Chief Gene Butcher said crews received a call at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The man was home alone when the fire started on the 1300 block of Muskingum Drive, Butcher said.

Fire officials believe the fire started on a stovetop in the kitchen and quickly spread throughout the home. When crews arrived at the home, they found the man in the living room.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say the cause of death is currently listed as smoke inhalation and thermal injury. An autopsy will be performed on Wednesday.

"The loss of life in this incident is heartbreaking, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim," said Waterford Regional Fire Department Chief Matthew Nye in a news release.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but officials believe the fire may have been accidental.
