Oakland County Man Charged After Wife Found Duct-Taped, Shot
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - An Oakland County man has been charged after an undercover police officer found the man's wife shot and duct-taped in a pickup truck on Detroit's east side.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office said Friday that 35-year-old Radu Vasile Muntean of Hazel Park faces charges including assault with intent to commit murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, unlawful imprisonment and felony firearm.
He was ordered held on a $100,000 cash/surety bond at a video arraignment on Friday.
Police said the officer, from nearby Grosse Pointe Park, spotted the pickup in a blighted area near a field Wednesday, at Lyford and Gilbo, in the area of Conner and Van Dyke, near City Airport.
He approached the driver, who told him he was out of gas and flashed a fake police badge.
"The officer thought it was suspicious," said Detroit Police Asst. Chief Steve Dolunt. "He looked in the car, in the truck, observed a white female, shot twice, duct-taped by the wrists and by the ankles and severely beaten."
Dolunt said investigators believe the suspect had planned to kill his wife and dump her body, before he was stopped by the undercover cop.
The 33-year-old victim, who had been shot in the legs, is expected to survive.
Police noted that this happened near the same field where the bodies of two Westland teens were found in 2012.
At Friday's arraignment, Muntean told the judge he is self-employed, runs a food truck and a construction business. The judge urged him to hire an attorney if he can afford to do so.
Muntean is due back in court for a hearing on Monday, April 4, at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice.
