Northern Michigan Drive-In Gets High Tech Rescue

HONOR (WWJ) -- A northern Michigan drive in movie theater is no longer in jeopardy of closing its doors thanks to Honda's Project Drive In.

With the end of 35-millimeter film distribution coming later this year, and the costly switch to digital projection, Honda created Project Drive In to save as many of America's remaining drive-ins as possible.

One of the winners was the Cherry Bowl Drive In, located along US-31 in Benzie County, near Traverse City. It will receive a high-tech rescue of digital projection equipment.

The Cherry Bowl was one of five national winners determined by the over two million votes received online.

A special celebration of the gift was scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday. Also, Honda officials said that following the Sept. 21 Los Angeles premiere of the family film "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2," all drive-ins receiving digital projectors from Honda's Project Drive-In will have the opportunity to screen the film before its wide release date.

Visitors to www.projectdrivein.com were encouraged to share Project Drive-In information with family and friends via social media, email or texts, pledge to see one movie at their local drive-in and contribute to the national save-the-drive-in fund to help keep more drive-ins in business.
