NFL Roundup

By: Eric Thomas

Football is baaack. I have never quite figured out how many "a's" to add into "back" in order to indicate excitement, I went with three. College football starts this weekend, the NFL starts next weekend. I am working cheese flavored snacks into my grocery budget, drinking herbal tea to get the vocal cords ready, and breaking up with my girlfriend.

Let's do some random thoughts about the NFL Season.

First, according to reports, the Bills acquired Tarvaris Jackson and punted Vince Young. I was so wrong on Vince Young. Coming out of college, I thought Young should have been drafted #1 overall. He was a winner, a leader, and seemed to pin the needle on the ever elusive "intangibles" meter. As it turns out, arm strength and accuracy are important. He seemed like he had some decent seasons with Tennessee, but now his career looks like a disappointment. Vince Young was cut to make room for Tarvaris Jackson. That's just a sad state of affairs.

Second, if I am Matt Flynn, I need to find someone to scream at. Absolutely no one pegged Russell Wilson as a rookie starter. It makes a lot of sense for fans, I'm sure, but you don't bench the same guy who was a prized off-season pick up only three weeks prior. Wilson played well in preseason while Flynn struggled, but that doesn't mean anything. Why would you start the rookie when you can wait for Flynn to struggle? Granted, Flynn signed that deal based on his performance in one game, a game that I have buried down deep in my psyche alongside little league failure and Cub Scout meetings, but he's played in the NFL. I've never been a fan of Pete Carol and this move doesn't do anything to prove me wrong. Carroll was lucky when he came into the worst division in football, but now he's going to get exposed. Look for the 'Hawks to drop to the basement of the NFL and bounce.

Tim Tebow didn't look good in the third preseason game with the Jets. I know, I should be flayed for saying his name. The preseason's number one story on ESPN (slow motion running, live camp coverage) looks like a no go now. Tim Tebow looked awful when compared to Sanchez and that's saying something. He threw an awful pick and looked lost when Tebow time came calling. The Jets offense looked awful back when they were good, now they just look putrid. Still, this smells like a preseason problem to me. It's hard for me to believe that gang green can go to the AFC championship twice consecutively and collapse. They might bust out when the game start mattering.

Dez Bryant signed off on being baby sat. How can you, as a man, look yourself in the mirror and say that you need a mommy holding your hand 24 hours a day? Dez Bryant is a grown man. The Cowboys forced him to sign a paper assigning him a guardian (essentially) and agreed to draconian rules usually reserved for third graders. I understand that Dallas after hours can be a good time, but how can you let it get to the point where you can't control yourself? Your TEAM has to take the bottle away from you, because you can't do it yourself. I don't know who is worse in this situation, Dallas for asking or Dez for taking it.

There's a rumor floating around NFL scouts that Peyton Manning is having trouble throwing to the left side of the field. Yikes.

Word is that Knowshon Moreno is apparently "on the bubble" in Denver. If he gets cut the Lions should swoop in. Better yet, how about go get him NOW, don't let him hit the open market. Moreno is what the Lions don't have. He has good speed, and the Lions don't have that unless Jahvid Best is coming back. He has been a bit of disappointment in Denver because of an ACL injury in 2011, but in games he has been decent. Is he going to be amazing? No, but the Lions don't need amazing they need a threat. With the Lion's passing attack, the ground game needs only to be a threat. Reunite Moreno and Stafford and maybe good things will come.
