Neighbors Frozen In By Water Main Break

Milder temperatures overnight allowed Jack Frost to loosen his grip on this west side neighborhood where a water main break last week had water gushing out on the streets.

Colder temperatures turned several inches of water into ice, leaving icy ruts in the pavement that made it impossible for residents to get in and out of their driveways along Appoline off Schoolcraft.

James Holbrook said his car was stuck for four hours.

"It's frustrating to be stuck for that long," he said. "I had to change a tire," pointing to the space-saver now occupying the rear left corner of his Oldsmobile.

Other block residents say the water had been flowing for four days. The city had been out once to lay salt.
As of Monday morning, the street was possible, but still reduced to two ruts in the road, with cars alongside the curb encased in ice and snow, unable to move.

Ricky Snow, another resident says you can't  rule out the number of abandoned homes where the water has been left on.

"It's a real major problem...that takes a few days to find out," he said.

The Mayor's office said they are aware of the problem, with crews expected to work on the problem sometime Monday.  Classes at Cody High School and the Second Chance program were canceled as a result.
